چکیده
Introduction Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the most controversial treatments in medicine, mainly because its still unknown mechanism action and uncertainty about cognitive side effects. ECT used when antidepressant medications do not result an adequate response severe depression, may also be indicated for other disorders. During acute phase after electroconvulsive there are better outcomes with unilateral compared to bilateral ECT. Objectives This literature review aims analyze validity despite impairment effectiveness therapy. Methods The method was a literary based on articles published Scielo Pubmed. Eighteen electronic English were 10-year time frame, using term as descriptors title, well all fields. Results We observed that older individuals benefit from ECT, faster rates higher remission rapid responders, hand they have risk effects induced by Anterograde retrograde amnesia usually resolve within months. Recovery incomplete, resulting permanent events occurred close Right-sided or more effective treating depression than left-sided. Patients who right had less verbal memory post-ictal recovery reorientation left bilateral, whereas showed smaller decline visual non-verbal tests. Bilateral acting, but associated impairments Conclusions can conclude effective, safe tolerable treatment, which results treatment alone pharmacotherapy. Cognitive largely transient, ending three decision use right, left, should made individually patient careful assessment relative priorities efficacy versus minimizing impairment.
